Most Runs in IPL Power Play

Scoring big in Powerplay is crucial for any team’s opener because it determines a team’s early impact in a match. In t20 cricket, any opener must score big because it can determine the outcome of the game. Generally, a powerplay consists of 36 balls or 06 overs, but this varies depending on the format. A powerplay simply determines the dangerous team in the league. In the case of the IPL, many teams have scored the highest score in Powerplay, and in this article, we will look at the top ten teams with the most runs in IPL Power Play.

01. Kolkata Knight Riders 105/0 (2017)

The Kolkata Knight Riders have scored the most runs in IPL Power Play. Kolkata Knight Riders scored 105 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Since 2017, KKR has held this position on the table. Royal Challengers Bangalore, who batted first, scored 158/6 runs, setting a competitive target for KKR.

In response, Sunil Narine of KKR set the tone with a brilliant knock of 54 runs off 17 balls. He accomplished this with the assistance of his partner Chris Lynn, who scored 50 runs on 22 balls. As a result, KKR chased down this target in 15.1 overs, and Sunil Narine was named player of the match for his outstanding performance with both the bat and the ball.

This is the highest opening partnership in IPL without losing a wicket.

02. Chennai Super Kings 100/2 (2014)

Kings XI Punjab set a mammoth target of 226 in 20 overs in one of the most exciting qualifiers in IPL history. In response, CSK scored 100 runs in six overs, breaking the record for most runs in IPL Power Play history.

CSK lost the first two wickets, but Suresh Raina and Brendon McCullum scored quickly to set a record of 100 runs in 36 balls. Although CSK lost the match at the end of the Innings, Suresh Raina recorded the highest individual score in IPL powerplay, 87 runs from 25 balls with 12 fours and 06 sixes.

03. Chennai Super Kings 90/0 (2015)

This is CSK’s second-highest score in a Powerplay of IPL. This time, Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum set the tone by scoring 90 runs in just six overs. The Mumbai Indians in 20 overs scored 186 runs to win. CSK chased down this target in 16.4 overs thanks to an outstanding start by McCullum and Smith. Suresh Raina made 43 runs in the chase. It is worth noting that Mumbai Indians’ bowling strength included players such as Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh, and chasing such a large target was a significant achievement for CSK.

04. Kochi Tuskers Kerala 87/2 (2011)

Kochi Tuskers Kerala only competed in one season of the IPL, but its name remains on the list of IPL teams with the highest Powerplay score. The Rajasthan Royals batted first and set a target of 97 runs for Kochi. In response, Kochi easily chased down the target in 7 overs with an aggressive batting from Mahela Jayawardena and Brendon McCullum.

05. Kings XI Punjab 86/1 (2014)

This was a sensational clash in IPL 2014 between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab. While batting first, SRH set a massive target of 205 runs for KXIP. In response, Kings XI Punjab was hoping for a dream start, but SRH’s excellent bowling put them under pressure by taking the first wicket. The game was then taken away from Sunrisers Hyderabad by Manan Vohra and W Saha, who scored 91 runs off 41 balls. It remains one of the most successful chases in IPL history.

06. Mumbai Indians 84/0 (2018)

This was a high-scoring match where Mumbai posted a total of 194/7 in 20 overs against Delhi Daredevils. Suryakumar Yadav and Ewin Lewis smashed 84 runs in Powerplay without losing a wicket. S Kumar Yadav scored 53 runs on 32 balls while E Lewis scored 48 runs on 28 balls. In response, the Delhi Daredevils easily chased down the target with the help of  Jason Roy’s 91-run innings on 53 balls.

07. Deccan Chargers 84/1 (2009)

Deccan Chargers is the oldest team in this list of most runs in IPL Power Play. In 2009 Deccan Charger scored 84 runs in the first six overs against Delhi. Adam Gilchrist smashed 85 runs in the semi-finals of the IPL 2009 season in Centurion, South Africa, to help Deccan Charges post a big total in Powerplay. With the help of this innings, Deccan Charges chased down a big total of 154 against Delhi Daredevils in 17.4 overs. Adam Gilchrist received player of the match awards for his one of the best IPL innings. 

08. Royal Challengers Banglore 83/4 (2015)

Virat Kohli is struggling with the bat, but this has not been the case in the past, as he has always performed consistently. Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle one of the most dangerous batters in IPL put on a 79-run opening stand to help RCB win the match on their own. Kohli hit 44 runs off 19 balls, while Gayle hit 35 runs off 10 balls. Virat Kohli was announced as the player of the match for his brilliant performance with the bat. Overall, Virat Kohli holds the record for most runs by a captain in IPL.

09. Kings XI Punjab 82/1 (2017)

Hashim Amla is known as a defensive cricketer, but he demonstrated his attacking batting skills in the IPL 2017. He scored 104 runs on 60 balls for Kings XI Punjab, with 8 fours and 6 sixes. He and his partner Shaun Marsh scored the highest IPL Powerplay score for King XI Punjab, 82/1 in 6 overs. However, Kings XI Punjab was unlucky due to Jos Buttler’s 77-ball innings, which helped Mumbai Indians win the match.

10. Sunrisers Hyderabad 79/0 (2017)

Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 79/0 in 36 balls. This was due to David Warner’s attacking innings, in which he scored his highest individual score in IPL history. He scored 126 runs on 59 balls with a strike rate of 213. SRH won the match by 48 runs as a result of this inning.
