The battle of captaincy is continued in Cricket since it started. Especially in T20 formats where few defeats can make a hero captain zero. So every captain tried to continue the winning streak. We can also see this battle in PSL because 29 captains have led different teams to make their franchise a successful team in PSL in these eight seasons. Let’s check the list of the most successful captains in PSL with the most wins:

Most Succesful Captain by Wins in PSL

Sarfaraz Ahmad – 36 Wins

Sarfaraz Ahmad is the most successful captain, as he won most matches in PSL. He is the only captain leading one team from Season one, Quetta Gladiator. Quetta played 73 matches under his captain, won 36, and lost 35 with a winning percentage of 49.


Sarfaraz Ahmad made it possible for Quetta to play in 3 PSL Finals (2016, 207 and 2019). But Quetta won only one title in the 2019 PSL.


Sarfaraz Ahmad is the pioneering captain of the new generation. Many talented players leading their franchises in PSL played under his leadership, like Babar Azam, Imad Wasim, Shadan Khan, and Shaheen Afridi.

Darren Sammay – 22 Wins

Darren Sammy led Peshawar Zalmi in three seasons from 2017 to 2019. Hewon 22 out of 39 games for Zalmi and lost only 16 matches. Peshawar Zalmi played three consecutive finals during his era and won their only PSL title in 2017.


He is one of the amazing characters in PSL, and Zalmi fans have special love and praise for him. Zalmi’s CEO has a strong bond with him; this is the reason they called him as a mentor in PSL 2023.

Imad Wasim – 15 Wins

Imad Wasim is the most underrated captain in PSL. But he led Karachi from 2019 to 2023 and helped them win their first PSL title. He left captaincy after winning the title for Babar Azam, but that hit hard to KK as they faced a big failure in PSL 2022.


Imad Wasim played 42 matches as a captain in PSL for Karachi Kings and 20 and lost 18 games. KK resumed him again as captain as Babar joined Peshawar Zalmi.

Muhammad Rizwan – 17 Wins

Muhammad Rizwan emerged very fast in this race. He has been captaining Multan Sultans since 2021. Multan started their journey very late as compared to others teams. In the first season, they picked Shan Masood as their captain but later decided to make Riwan their captain after seeing his skills in domestic tournaments.


Muhammad Rizwan played 26 PSL matches as a captain of Multan Sultans, won 17, and lost seven. He has a winning percentage of 65, which is the highest in PSL.

Shadab Khan – 17 wins

After the Retirement of Misbah ul Haq, Shadab Khan took charge of the captaincy. From 2019 to 23, he led IU in 32 games, won 17, and lost 15.


Shadab’s captaincy is not very effective because Islamabad United failed to reach any final in any season. But you cannot neglect him; during these years, Islamabad became one of the most destructive teams in PSL, and fans believe IU will win this season.

Misbah-ul-Haq – 15 wins

Misbah-ul-Haq is known for his calm behavior on the field. His coolness made him the most successful captain of PSL till he retired. He is the first captain to win first PSL title.


Misbah led IU in 26 games from 2016 to 2018 and won 15 matches. He lost ten matches, and one game ended with no result.

Wahab Riaz – 13 wins

Wahab Riaz is the first proper bowler on this list. He became captain of PZ after Darren Sammy’s departure. He was under great pressure as he had to continue the legacy of Sammay, making Peshawar one of the most prominent teams in the tournament.


Wahab Riaz led PZ in three seasons from 2020 to 2022. He played 28 games as captain of PZ, won 13, and lost 14. Zalmi played only one final in 2021 and lost to MS.

Sohail Akhtar – 12 wins

Most people will be surprised after seeing Sohail Akhter on this list because he has not played many matches for Pakistan. But he led Lahore Qalandars for two seasons from 2018 to 2020.
Lahore Qalandars made their first-ever presence under his captaincy in PSl 2020 but lost to Karachi Kings. Sohail Akhtar captained Lahore in 23 games, won 12 and lost 11. Surprisingly, he has a winning percentage of more than 50.

Shoaib Malik – 10 wins

He is the most experienced player and the only player in PSL who started his cricketing career in the last century.
Shoaib Malik played 30 matches as a captain of three teams in PSL. He leads Multan Sultans, Karachi Kings, and Peshawar Zalmi from 2016 to 2022.
His winning percentage is quite disappointing; is 33. he won only ten games and lost 19.

Shaheen Shah Afridi – 9 wins

Shaheen Shah is known for his aggressive opening overs. He started his captaincy career with Lahore Qalandars and won the first title in his debut season.
Shaheen Afridi played 14 matches as captain of LQ, won 9, and lost only four games. He is young and has a long career ahead. Fans believe he will be the next successful captain of PSL.

Babar Azam won only two matches as a captain in PSL and lost 10.
