Lowest Powerplay Score in IPL History

Powerplay is an essential part of a team’s innings. Any IPL team that scores the most runs in the powerplay sets a higher target than a team that scores the least runs in the powerplay. Therefore, in any league of the cricket world, a team would have to manage powerplay overs decently to score a big total which is only possible if the initial batters of a team perform well. Sunrisers Hyderabad Vs RR 14/3 (2022)

Sunrisers Hyderabad scored the lowest powerplay runs of IPL 2022 in a match against Rajasthan Royals. Rajasthan Royals led by Sanju Samson batted first and scored a big total of 210 runs. Sanju Samson scored a brilliant inning of 55 runs on 27 balls with 5 sixes. In reply, Sunrisers could not start well due to continuous well-managed bowling by Trent Boult and Y Chahal. Y Chahal took 03 wickets in 04 overs and helped Royals to win with a big margin of 61 runs.

Rajasthan Royals 14/2 Vs RCB (2009)

Rajasthan Royals was the first team that scored the lowest powerplay score in IPL. This happened in IPL 2009 in a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Rahul Dravid from Royal Challengers Bangalore scored 66 runs from 48 balls with a 137 strike rate. They set a total of 133 for the Rajasthan Royals.

In reply, Praveen Kumar from Royal Challengers troubled Rajasthan Royals batting in early overs by taking key wickets with his swing bowling. This is the lowest total in a powerplay by Rajasthan Royals when Royal Challengers Banglore restrict them at 14/2 in 6 overs.

Chennai Super Kings 15/2 Vs KKR (2011)

The lowest runs scored by Chennai Super Kings in powerplay is against Kolkata Knight Riders. When brilliant spin bowling, by Kolkata Knight Riders’ Iqbal Abdullah and Yusuf Pathan restricted Chennai Super Kings to 15 runs in 6 overs in the 2011 IPL. Chennai Super Kings posted a total of 114 runs in 20 overs. In reply, the D/L method was applied due to rain and KKR won the match in 10 overs.

Chennai Super Kings 16/1 Vs DC (2015)

In IPL 2015, Shreyas Iyer scored a classic 70 runs innings against Chennai Super Kings to help win the game. Delhi Capitals bowled first and restricted CSK batters to score only 16 runs in the powerplay. This was the lowest powerplay score match of IPL 2015. Zaheer Khan was the hero of this match who bowled 04 overs and took 2 wickets for 09 runs.

Chennai Super Kings 16/1 Vs RCB (2019)

This was the low-scoring match between Chennai and Bangalore in which RCB posted 70 runs target for Chennai. In reply, Chennai Super Kings started in a defensive mood against RCB bowling. They scored 16 runs in 6 overs and registered themselves on the list of teams with the lowest Powerplay score in IPL. Despite the fact, that they started their batting in a defensive mood but their ultimate goal was to reach the target which they did in the 17th over. 

Kolkata Knight Riders  17/4 Vs RCB (2020)

Kolkata Knight Riders batted first in a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore and scored a total of 84 runs in 20 overs. In powerplay, KKR scored only 17 runs against 4 wickets.

Their main reason for the low score was Muhammad Siraj who bowled superb overs from RCB and took crucial back-to-back 03 wickets. Muhammad Siraj was announced as a player of the match for his fantastic bowling figures of 3 wickets for 8 runs in 4 overs.

Mumbai Indians  17/3 Vs KXIP (2015)

In IPL 2015, Kings XI Punjab batted first in a match against Mumbai Indians and scored a total of 177 runs in 20 overs. In reply, Mumbai Batting came under pressure due to attacking bowling from Kings XI Punjab bowlers Sandeep Sharma, Anureet Singh, and Mitchell Johnson.

All these bowlers took early 03 wickets to restrict Mumbai to 17 runs in the first 06 overs. As a result, Mumbai could not recover the from early damage and lost the match.

Royal Challengers Bangalore 17/1 Vs Chenni(2014)

In IPL 2014, Chennai Super Kings scored a total of 138 runs in 20 overs. In reply, Ravichandran Ashwin bowled superb early overs to restrict RCB to 17 runs in 6 overs.

Then it was AB De Villiers who led from the front and took RCB to the required total on the last ball of the innings. Royal Challengers Bangalore won the match on the last ball and AB De Villiers was announced as the player of the match.

Rajasthan Royals 17/4 Vs KKR (2021)

In IPL 2021, Rajasthan Royals was restricted by KKR to 17 runs in 6 overs by KKR bowlers. Shivam Mavi was the hero of this match as he took RR’s important 04 wickets in 04 overs. Shivam was announced as the player of the match for his amazing bowling. Kolkata Knight Riders posted a big total of 171 runs in 20 overs. In reply, Kolkata Knight Riders bowled out Rajasthan Royals on 85 runs. 

RR 17/4 against KKR in 2021

Rajasthan Royals 18/1 Vs MI (2011)

This was another low-scoring match in IPL history where Mumbai bowlers outclass Rajasthan Royals in Powerplay overs. Mumbai set the target of 94 runs in 20 overs. In reply, Munaf Patel from Mumbai bowled economical overs to restrict Rajsthan for 18 runs in 6 overs. Later on, Rajasthan Royals fought back and chased the target to win the match.
