Ajinkaya Rahane is a player who is occasionally said to be underrated in the Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma era. He is only underrated because of the intense competition on the Indian squad. He was given the captaincy in the absence of the regular captains and won most of the matches as a captain. In ODI cricket, Ajinkaya Rahane Captained Team India in Zimbabwe in three-match series. This series was played in 2015 in Zimbabwe when Rahane was given a chance of captaincy. He proved his captaincy skills by winning all three matches for India. Team India won the series with a clean sweep against Zimbabwe. As a captain, he performed really well with the bat to win the series.

Ajinkaya Rahane led India in 06 test matches, winning 04 and losing 02 with a win percentage of 66. He led the Indian team against Afghanistan, Australia, and New Zealand.
Firstly, he was appointed as a Vice-Captain and later as a stand-by captain in the absence of a regular captain.

He led Rajasthan Royals in 2018 and 2019 seasons of IPL. In the 2018 season, Rajasthan remained at the number 04 position on the point table, winning most matches. IPL season 2019 could have gone better for Rajsthan under the leadership of Rahane, and they secured the 7th position on the table.
